Chairperson of Belstat met with UN Resident Coordinator – UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus

On June 20, 2018, Chairperson of Belstat Inna Medvedeva met with UN Resident Coordinator – UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki. The meeting was also attended by UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Belarus Zachary Taylor, UNDP Programme Officer in Belarus Natalya Karkanitsa, Deputy Chairperson of Belstat Elena Kukharevich and Head of the International Cooperation and Statistical Information Dissemination Department of Belstat Irina Mazaiskaya.

Inna Medvedeva told about the most topical areas of cooperation with the organizations of the UN system. In particular, special attention was paid to the development of the National Reporting Platform for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), implementation of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) into the statistical practice of the Republic of Belarus, strengthening the capacity of the Republic of Belarus in the collection, analysis and use of demographic data for the SDGs, conducting the 2019 population census, building national statistical capacity in the production and dissemination of information on the situation of children, women and persons with disabilities for monitoring progress towards the SDGs.

For her part, Ms Kazana-Wisniowiecki noted that the priority of the UN/UNDP activities is the implementation of the United Nations General Assembly resolution on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is highly consistent with the activities of Belstat to organize monitoring of the SDGs.

The parties also discussed the organization of SDG monitoring at the regional level. Ms. Kazana-Wisniowiecki expressed her readiness to get actively involved in the work of regional working groups established under the Council for Sustainable Development.

During the meeting, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Belarus Zachary Taylor noted that at present the UNDP Country Office in Belarus is interested in studying the role of women in the labour force. The participants of the meeting expressed their readiness to cooperate at all levels in order to implement the UN/UNDP initiatives.

As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached that the UN/UNDP will support the implementation of the second phase of the development of the National Reporting Platform for SDGs.
