The 50th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, the supreme body of the international statistical system, was held in New York, USA, on March 5-8, 2019. First Deputy Chairperson of the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus Irina Kangro participated in its work.
According to the agenda of the session, the representatives of the statistical offices of the United Nations member states and international organisations discussed a wide range of topical issues related to the data and indicators for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, implementation of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, basic national quality assurance frameworks, research agenda for the new components of the System of National Accounts, environmental-economic accounting, finance, international trade, entrepreneurship, industry, education statistics and other statistical domains.
The position of the Republic of Belarus was presented by I. Kangro during the discussion of the issues on the Sustainable Development Goal indicators, national quality assurance frameworks, national accounts.
In order to strengthen and expand the business relations in the international statistical community, promote the interests of our country in taking fundamental decisions in the field of statistics, the First Deputy Chairperson of Belstat I. Kangro held a number of important meetings on the sidelines of the session, including:
- with representatives of the UN agencies – on the expansion of project cooperation in terms of strengthening national statistical capacity to monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals;
- with President of the National Statistical Institute of the Republic of Bulgaria Sergey Tsvetarsky – on signing the action plan between the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus and the National Statistical Institute of the Republic of Bulgaria on cooperation in the field of statistics;
- with Member of the Board – Minister in charge of Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission Tatyana Valovaya – on further cooperation in the field of statistics in compliance with the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union.
The participation of the Belarusian side in the 50th session of the UN Statistical Commission (Belarus has been elected a member of the Commission for a 4-year term since January 1, 2017) contributed to the adoption of decisions on the main items of its agenda.
