The Expert meeting on measuring poverty and inequality and the Workshop on harmonization of poverty statistics to measure SDG 1 in countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia were organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva, Switzerland. Deputy Chairperson of the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus, Head of the Interagency Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment of the SDGs Achievement of the Council for Sustainable Development Elena Kukharevich took part in their work.
The participants of the meeting considered the issues related to measurement of poverty and inequality, in particular disaggregation of poverty indicators for monitoring the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, representativeness and accuracy of survey samples, impact of social transfers on poverty, use of administrative data for measurement, got familiar with best international practices in this area. The representatives of the participating countries studied the experience of Belarus in the assessment of multidimensional poverty.
During the seminar special attention was paid to the exchange of experience in developing statistical capacity to measure poverty and identifying the main areas of further action for harmonization of poverty statistics. Elena Kukharevich reported about the progress of the Republic of Belarus in measuring SDG 1 and harmonization of poverty statistics in the framework of SDG 1 monitoring.
