Experience of Belstat on innovations in gender statistics presented at the 9th Global Forum on Gender Statistics

The 9th Global Forum on Gender Statistics (hereinafter the Forum) is held in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 29 to 31 August 2023, organized by the UN Statistics Division in collaboration with the Statistical Office of South Africa. The event is attended by the First Deputy Chairperson of Belstat Elena Kukharevich and the Head of the Living Standards Statistics and Household Surveys Department of Belstat Inna Konoshonok.

The Forum is a unique platform for sharing information, reviewing and discussing initiatives and tools related to the collection, production, analysis, dissemination and use of gender statistics.

On the second day of the Forum in the framework of the session 5 «Innovations to close gender data gaps» Elena Kukharevich shared Belstat’s experience in improving gender statistics.

«We are constantly working to expand the list of indicators of gender statistics in Belarus, taking into account international standards and national needs. New surveys are being conducted, new modules are being introduced into ongoing surveys, and statistical reporting is being modified to produce gender-disaggregated indicators. In addition, we work closely with government bodies that own administrative databases. As a result, in recent years of work we have introduced new gender indicators in the field of private enterprise, land ownership, victimization and discrimination, decision-making within the household, satisfaction of the population with the public services received and a number of other characteristics of the rights and opportunities of women and men, girls and boys in the Republic of Belarus», - noted Elena Kukharevich in her speech.

The Forum participants were particularly interested in the information about the active position of Belarusian women in decision-making on education, participation in the labour market, social life, and the level of their involvement in entrepreneurship.

The «Web-portal «Gender Statistics», created with the support of the «UN-Women» and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also aroused great interest among the participants of the Forum. The portal includes 177 indicators and provides up-to-date official statistics and administrative gender data in the areas of demography, health, education, employment and economy, well-being, public life and decision-making, communication, offences and violence.

In conclusion, Elena Kukharevich emphasized that gender statistics in Belarus is the basis for managerial decision-making and for the preparation of various programmes from a gender perspective.

The Belarusian side will also participate on 1 September 2023 in the seminar «Measuring gender-in-trade: from concepts to practice», organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) jointly with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The workshop will present the results of the pilots carried out by UNECA and UNECE on the compilation of sets of gender statistics indicators in trade, based on conceptual work of UNCTAD, and the possibilities of using existing national statistics for gender-sensitive trade policy will be considered.
