The UNECE Task Force on the changing role of national statistical offices in data ecosystems established under the auspices of the Bureau of the Conference of European Statisticians is meeting in Vienna (Republic of Austria) on 29-30 January 2025. The National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus is represented at the event by Deputy Chairperson Zhanna Vasilevskaya.
The work of the Task Force is focused on identifying the main functions of NSOs as data stewards and the risks associated with expanding their role in national data ecosystems.
The meeting reviewed the draft report prepared by the Task Force which sets out the key responsibilities of statistical organisations as data governors and the challenges and opportunities associated with their implementation.
During the discussion, Zhanna Vasilevskaya shared Belstat's experience in improving the legal framework and outlined strategic directions for data stewardship activities in the Republic of Belarus.
‘The country has developed a solid legal framework for the maintenance of statistics – the mandate of Belstat for data obtaining has been strengthened. As a result, the bodies of state statistics have access to all information resources of the country. Moreover, statisticians are involved in the design and modernisation of information systems of data providers.
All statistical reporting goes to a single server and is processed using common regulstory and reference information.
Currently, a project to create a national system of state data management is implemented in the country with Belstat acting as the main methodologist.’
Zhanna Vasilevskaya noted that participation in the work of the Task Force will contribute to capacity building in the field of data stewardship.
